Faith In Her: Global South Women’s Conference

FFOP, hosted a flagship event, “Faith in Her,”  during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 19, 2023. The event aimed to highlight the role of women of faith in climate leadership, existing systemic barriers to their participation, and how and why these barriers must be overcome. Over 75 representatives from FBOs, civil society, and environmental organizations attended the event.

The conference was convened to identify and mobilize faith to address and overcome institutional barriers that limit access to climate leadership and decision-making, developing networks of women of faith to influence policy and share resources and capacity, engaging with high-profile women leaders in the fields of climate, policymaking, and religious fraternity, and forming a coalition of faith-adhering women from the Global North and South based on equity, accessibility, representation, and locally-led solutions.

The workshop featured esteemed speakers and experts who have made immense contributions to the fields of environmental preservation, religious communities, and civil society. These included Karenna Gore, Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Earth Ethics, Hon. Rohey John Manjang Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources – Government of the Gambia, Rabbi Ellen Bernstein Founder Shomrei Adamah, Ambassador Ismat Jahan Permanent Observer for the Organization for Islamic Cooperation with the European Union, Nana Firman, Founder of the EcoFab and EcoHijrah movements; Senior Ambassador of Greenfaith, Priyanka Srinivasa, Founder of #IWillGoOut campaign (UN lauded ‘one of twelve hashtags to follow) against gender violence in India; Executive Board Member of Sadhana, Kadjahtou Balde, Founder Faithfully Sustainable, Amra Sabic El-Rayess, Executive Director of the International Interfaith Research Laboratory at Columbia University, Ndelika Mandela, Founder of the Thembekile Mandela Foundation, Rev. Dionne p. Boissiere, Chaplain of the Church Center for the United Nations, Dr. Rajwant Singh, Founder and Global President of EcoSikh; Advisory Board Member of Faith For Our Planet and Shiraz Ahmad, International Director, Faith For Our Planet.
